“IDC is witnessing an early ramp of desktop virtualization adoption, which we expect will accelerate over the next 12-18 months,” said Michael Rose, industry analyst, IDC. “As companies consider adopting the technology, they will need to ensure a reliable and optimal user experience over the entire network. HP addresses these needs through a combination of its own IP and strategic partnerships, which combine hardware and software with industry credibility that will attract businesses looking for assurance before investing in this technology.”

No-compromise mobility, from virtually anywhere

As the world’s No. 1 thin client and notebook manufacturer, HP has designed the HP 2533t Mobile Thin Client with an array of hardware and software that provide the mobility of a notebook and the enhanced security, improved ease of use and reliability delivered by thin clients.

As security is a continuous customer challenge, the HP 2533t provides enhanced access to virtual computing solutions, such as blade PCs or a virtual desktop infrastructure, and increased protection of corporate data and software applications by storing files on a secure, centralized server. No data resides on the actual mobile thin client, so companies are assured that data is not compromised in the event the client is lost or stolen.

To remedy the reliability risk of that comes with true mobility, the HP 2533t is similar to traditional desk-based thin clients in that it is a solid-state system with flash memory and no moving parts. This provides faster data access and cooler operation for overall improved reliability and product lifespan.

Inspired by the durability, precision and lightness of aircraft construction, the new mobile thin client also features the HP DuraCase design for higher reliability, lower ownership costs and extended product life. The HP DuraCase is an incredibly strong outer casing that protects the top and bottom of the product for use in rigorous mobile user environments.

A magnesium/aluminum display enclosure uses an inner magnesium shell bonded for a more solid construction and enhanced display impact-protection. In addition, HP DuraKeys and HP DuraFinish both help keep the thin client looking new, longer.

The HP 2533t weighs only three pounds and features a 12.1-inch diagonal widescreen LED display, adding a smaller and lighter option to the portfolio’s previously introduced 15.4-inch HP 6720t Mobile Thin Client. Integrated Wi-Fi certified WLAN provides access to the Internet, email and instant messaging while at work, home or any favorite hotspot,(1) along with support for 3G broadband wireless(2) via PC memory card slot for the ultimate secure, mobile computing(3) experience. The HP 2533t also offers three flexible battery configurations for lightest weight or all-day computing and a convenient docking system.

The new mobile thin client simplifies IT operations by allowing administrators to manage multiple client types simultaneously from a remote location with features such as HP ThinState Tools to configure software and Altiris Deployment Solution to easily distribute applications over the network with little or no interruption to users.

Additional features help the HP 2533t lessen an organization’s environmental impact. It includes power management features for more efficient performance and lower energy costs, as well as an HP Smart AC Adapter with built-in sensor to alert the notebook user of the power rating. It also includes the HP Illumi-Lite display, a highly efficient, mercury-free LED backlit display that reduces hazardous materials use and can extend battery life by up to 90 minutes.(4)

The HP 2533t Mobile Thin Client is available today in the United States, Latin America, Asia and Japan. Pricing and additional availability vary by region. Additional information is available at www.hp.com/go/thinclient.

Delivering full, rich multimedia experiences to large virtual desktop implementations

HP also is announcing plans to further invest in the advanced multimedia technology on which the HP Remote Graphics Software (RGS) was created. HP is working with virtualization software vendors to expand the technology to significantly enhance the rich multimedia experience available through thin clients or other remote devices.

Originally developed in HP Labs, RGS is already in broad use by customers spanning financial services, healthcare, education and research, engineering, and digital content creation. HP will be working with its key software virtualization vendors to develop additional solutions for improved video performance, interoperability and scalability of large virtual desktop implementations serving business PC users.

HP RGS supports a remote, yet collaborative work model that helps overcome the distance barriers that can impede global organizations and delivers to remote client environments rich, local desktop-like user experiences. With HP RGS, professionals can work together, from any physical location with Internet access, and make decisions in real-time with more secure access to multimedia content including flash animations, video, hardware accelerated 2D and 3D applications.

Rather than sending user data or graphics commands that grow with image complexity, the RGS software captures the desktop image of the remote or “virtual” system and transmits it over a standard network to a window on a local thin client using advanced image compression technology, specifically designed for text, digital imagery and high frame-rate video applications.

“We believe the combination of HP thin clients and RGS is the ideal choice for a rich virtual desktop experience, regardless of the chosen virtualization infrastructure, and we want to ensure customers can take advantage of this solution with whichever infrastructure best fits their business needs,” said Moctezuma.

More information about HP Remote Graphics Software is available at www.hp.com/go/rgs.

Silver Peak Delivers Industry’s First Gigabit WAN Acceleration Appliance

Santa Clara, CA, May 19, 2008 – Silver Peak Systems, a leading provider of scalable Wide Area Network (WAN) acceleration solutions, today introduced the NX-9000, the newest member of the company’s award winning NX family of appliances. The NX-9000 is the industry’s first Gigabit WAN acceleration product, raising the bar for WAN performance and scale.

“The amount of data being generated by enterprises is growing at 50 – 60 percent year over year,” said Bob Laliberte, analyst at ESG. “All of this data needs to be not only protected, but it also needs to be accessible from enterprise locations around the globe. Existing WAN links that provide connectivity to data centers and remote locations can get overwhelmed very quickly. Buying additional bandwidth to accommodate the data growth is prohibitively cost expensive. The convergence of rapid data growth and the need to transport large amounts of data for accessibility and/or protection creates a fundamental need for bigger and faster WAN optimization solutions.”

Head of the Class
The NX-9000 supports up to 4 Gbps of bidirectional LAN side traffic and 1 Gbps of bidirectional WAN side traffic, with 8 TB of local data store available for WAN deduplication. The newest Silver Peak appliance delivers 4 times – 10 times the real-time throughput of competitive offerings. Other unique scalability advantages of the NX-9000 include:

  • 10 Gbps Interfaces. The NX-9000 includes two 10Gbps interfaces and four 1Gbps interfaces with EtherChannel bonding for physical connectivity between Silver Peak appliances and network elements, which is required for deployment in data center environments. As more hosts turn to multi-Gbps interfaces, the NX-9000 has the capacity required to support the corresponding growth in data volumes.
  • Industry Leading Flow Capacity: The NX-9000 supports over 256,000 simultaneous TCP flows, enabling hundreds of offices to be connected to a single appliance and more traffic to flow between devices.
  • Wirespeed Encryption: Silver Peak NX appliances ensure that data is always secure – at rest and across the WAN. By performing encryption in hardware, this functionality takes place at wirespeed (with no impact on performance or scale).
  • Accelerate all applications: Silver Peak optimizes all enterprise applications, including TCP traffic (file, email), real-time UDP traffic (VoIP, video), latency sensitive traffic (Citrix, data replication) and applications with dynamic data formats (AutoCAD, MS Excel).

Silver Peak offers the most scalable family of WAN acceleration appliances on the market today, from the NX-2000, which supports up to 2 Mbps of WAN traffic, to the NX-9000, which is the first and only Gbps WAN acceleration appliance. Customers using Silver Peak’s NX appliances include AT&T, AutoDesk, Ball Corporation, Capgemini, Ernst & Young, Finisar, Linklaters, Texas Instruments, VMware and many other enterprises.

Elevating WAN Performance

The NX-9000 is ideal for a variety of “high volume” data environments, including SAN replication, access to centralized databases, remote office backup, video streaming and application delivery from centralized servers. Like all Silver Peak NX appliances, the NX-9000 utilizes the following advanced optimization technologies to improve WAN bandwidth efficiency and accelerate application performance:

  • Network Memory™: The industry’s leading solution for disk-based WAN deduplication. Network Memory is the only WAN deduplication solution that works on latency sensitive traffic and both TCP and non-TCP applications.
  • Network Acceleration: Silver Peak employs various acceleration techniques that minimize latency caused by TCP and other “chatty” protocols.
  • Network Integrity: Silver Peak is the only WAN optimization vendor to address lost and out-of-order packets in real-time using adaptive Forward Error Correction (FEC) and Packet Order Correction (POC). In addition, advanced queuing/scheduling and application-based Quality of Service (QoS) policies help enterprises avoid congestion and prioritize business-critical applications.

“It is becoming increasingly common for enterprises to deploy Gigabit WAN connections using MPLS, IP VPNs and similar ’shared’ technologies,” said Jeff Aaron, director of marketing at Silver peak. “Silver Peak is the only vendor to address the unique bandwidth, latency and loss issues inherent to these environments. With the NX family of appliances, enterprises get the most out of all of their WAN connections – from the smallest branch office to the largest data center.”

About Silver Peak Systems, Inc.
Silver Peak improves backup, replication and recovery between data centers and facilitates branch office server and storage centralization by improving application performance across the Wide Area Network (WAN). The company’s award winning NX appliances deliver exceptional performance improvements with unprecedented security and scalability across all enterprise applications, including data replication, backup, file transfers, email, web and real-time applications such as Citrix and VoIP. Microsoft Expands Datacenter Management Offerings With Advanced Heterogeneous and Virtualization Capabilities

LAS VEGAS — April 29, 2008 — Today, before an audience of more than 4,000 IT professionals and partners at the Microsoft Management Summit (MMS) 2008, Bob Muglia, senior vice president of the Server and Tools Business at Microsoft Corp., outlined the next phase in the company’s strategy to enable dynamic IT organizations. As part of this strategy, Muglia announced technology innovations that are designed to expand Microsoft’s virtualization capabilities and introduced its use of open source technologies and industry standards to broaden its ability to deliver automated management of heterogeneous IT environments.

“At Microsoft we are helping redefine what it means to do IT management in the enterprise with the new capabilities we are announcing today,” Muglia said. ”By taking our knowledge of the Windows environment and expanding it to address heterogeneous management needs across platforms, applications, hardware and virtualization, we are opening up a new level of opportunity for companies to drive greater efficiency, responsiveness and value for their business.”

As IT environments grow more diverse and complex across desktops, datacenters, physical and virtual deployments, and heterogeneous infrastructures spanning Windows and non-Windows environments, Microsoft has worked closely with customers to deliver a comprehensive enterprise strategy for an integrated management solution. The announcements today build on the strong, existing Microsoft System Center presence in the datacenter with key additions in the areas of cross-platform, expanded interoperability and multivendor virtualization management solutions, which are further extended by the contributions of a strong and growing partner ecosystem.

Extending Cross-Platform Management for the Datacenter

Microsoft today announced the availability of a public beta for System Center Operations Manager 2007 Cross Platform Extensions, which build on the existing Operations Manager 2007 technology and capabilities and are designed to help customers extend the value of their Microsoft System Center investments. Providing customers with a comprehensive management solution, this new end-to-end IT systems monitoring capability incorporates industry standards and proven open source technologies, including Web Services for Management (WS-Management) and OpenPegasus, extending the capabilities across both physical and virtualized Windows and non-Windows operating systems and applications. Microsoft delivers the core foundational cross-platform support out of the box for HP-UX, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Sun Solaris and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server operating systems so that partners can focus on adding their deep domain expertise in the form of management packs. Companies such as Novell Inc., Quest Software Inc. and Xandros Inc. have demonstrated their support by working to deliver monitoring abilities for applications made by organizations such as The Apache Software Foundation, MySQL AB and Oracle.

Further demonstrating support for its commitment to OpenPegasus, Microsoft also announced today that it will be joining the OpenPegasus Steering Committee and contribute code back to the open source community under the Microsoft Public License, an Open Source Initiative (OSI)-approved license.

“The System Center Operations Manager 2007 Cross Platform Extensions have already delivered exciting results for Xandros,” said Andreas Typaldos, CEO of Xandros. “They enabled us to cut our expected development time in half as we created our management packs for Apache and MySQL running on Linux and Solaris, resulting in quicker time to market and delivery of betas to our customers today. This new foundation from Microsoft enabled us to focus on the development of high-level management functions for applications, with the knowledge that the Cross Platform Extensions were providing the necessary underlying interfaces to System Center Operations Manager, enabling heterogeneous management from a single location across customer environments.”

Microsoft also delivered a beta of the updated System Center Operations Manager 2007 Connectors, based on many of the same extensible open source technology and industry standards as the Cross Platform Extensions, which provide an integrated administrative experience and the ability to interoperate and exchange System Center monitoring data with third-party management offerings such as HP OpenView and IBM Tivoli Enterprise Console.

Single Pane of Glass for Managing Virtualized and Physical IT Assets

Also delivered today was the public beta of System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 (formerly code-named “Virtual Machine Manager vNext”), which enables customers to configure and deploy new virtual machines and to centrally manage their virtualized infrastructure, whether running on Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V, Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 or VMware ESX Server.

System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 tightly integrates with Operations Manager 2007 to deliver a new feature called Performance and Resource Optimization (PRO). Using deep knowledge of the IT environment including operating systems, applications and hardware, Operations Manager identifies opportunities for more efficient physical and virtual resource allocation and generates “PRO tips” within the Virtual Machine Manager console. Administrators can implement these PRO tips and dynamically optimize their datacenter based upon pre-defined policies and the real-time, changing demands of users. When used in conjunction with the broad System Center management suite, System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 enables customers effectively to manage both their virtualized and physical servers and applications across their desktops and datacenters with a single set of consistent, compatible tools.

“Deploying, monitoring and managing applications across a heterogeneous IT infrastructure can present many challenges and complexities, all of which are compounded when consolidating servers, optimizing desktops and applications, or creating business continuity solutions using multiple virtualization solutions,” said Jerry Phillips, senior director of Systems Operations at Clear Channel Communications Inc. “Our experience with System Center solutions has demonstrated that Microsoft not only recognizes our need to manage our Windows datacenter infrastructure, but also non-Windows and virtual servers from other vendors. Being able to do so through a single administrative console will provide improvements in productivity and reductions in our cost of IT operations, enabling us to improve overall organizational contributions.”

A number of partners, including Brocade, Dell, EMC Corp., Emulex Corp., HP, NetQOS, QLogic Corp. and Quest, announced they will deliver management packs enabled for PRO. These management packs enable partners and customers to integrate their domain-specific knowledge directly into Virtual Machine Manager and further integrate physical and virtual management.

“Dell’s focus is to simplify IT for our customers and drive complexity out of the datacenter, and virtualization is a key technology driving this effort,” said Laurie Tolson, vice president of systems management at Dell Product Group. “By working with industry leaders like Microsoft on advances in systems management between Dell OpenManage and Microsoft Hyper-V, System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 and Windows Server 2008, we’re able to bridge the gap between the physical and virtual management spaces, providing an optimized solution that helps our customers get the most out of their hardware and virtualization investments.”

“New ways to lower energy costs, reduce server sprawl and optimize datacenters are provided by the collaboration between HP and Microsoft as virtualization goes mainstream,” said Scott Farrand, vice president of Industry Standard Server Software at HP. “Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager used alongside HP Insight software on HP ProLiant servers, and HP Server Automation software, allow customers to seamlessly manage physical and virtual environments. The combined solutions also allow customers to maximize availability, performance and flexibility of physical host servers, virtualized guest operating systems and workloads.”

Live Mesh

Microsoft came out with a preview of new interesting product, Live Mesh

What is Live Mesh?

Live Mesh is a “software-plus-services” platform and experience that enables PCs and other devices to “come alive” by making them aware of each other through the Internet, enabling individuals and organizations to manage, access, and share their files and applications seamlessly on the Web and across their world of devices. Live Mesh includes:

§ A platform that defines and models a user’s digital relationships between devices, data, applications, and people—made available to developers through an open data model and protocols.

§ A cloud service providing an implementation of the platform hosted in Microsoft data centers.

§ Software, a client implementation of the platform that enables local applications to run offline and interact seamlessly with the cloud.

§ A platform experience that exposes the key benefits of the platform for bringing together a user’s devices, files and applications, and social graph, with news feeds across all of these.

What differentiates Live Mesh is its underlying platform. As a platform company, Microsoft believes in the power of the operating environment—and that if that environment is built correctly, the entire ecosystem will benefit. Live Mesh is built on the Live Services Platform, providing a Web-centric Mesh Operating Environment that evolves the user experience from one of “My Computer” to one of “My Mesh,” with the user at the center of that experience.

While many existing offerings may appear similar in that they utilize hosted services for storage, sharing files, or peer-to-peer connections between PCs, most of those products fulfill only one specific need. Live Mesh is unique in that it takes a more robust approach, bringing together all of this functionality in one offering. By weaving together the best of software and Internet services, Live Mesh delivers a platform and experience that is comprehensive yet simple and open.

LAS VEGAS — April 17, 2008— At RFID Journal LIVE! 2008, Microsoft Corp. today unveiled Microsoft BizTalk RFID Mobile — a lightweight platform for a variety of mobile devices, which simplifies the development of mobile applications that expose relevant, real-time business information. BizTalk RFID Mobile enables delivery of relevant information from mobile devices to core business processes for a variety of scenarios, whether for a dock worker verifying a shipment or a pharmacist verifying that the right medicine has been stocked.

Microsoft today made available a private beta with general availability expected in late 2008. Customers and partners can participate in the BizTalk RFID Mobile Technology Adoption Program (TAP) by registering at https://connect.microsoft.com/site/sitehome.aspx?S...eID=65.

“Given today’s fast-paced environment, customers have asked for business process technologies that enable real-time decision-making to help drive measurable business results,” said Burley Kawasaki, director of product management in the Connected Systems Division at Microsoft. “Together, with leading industry partners including Motorola Inc., Intermec Technologies Corp., Unitech, Samsung and Psion Teklogix Inc., we will deliver a cost-effective, mobile RFID platform that works with existing business processes and systems.”

As part of the Microsoft BizTalk product line, Microsoft BizTalk RFID Mobile underscores the company’s long-term commitment to deliver extensive service-oriented architecture (SOA) and business process management (BPM) capabilities as part of the overall Microsoft application platform. The platform is a set of compatible, mission-critical technologies and development tools that enable customers to develop applications that work with existing systems.

“BizTalk RFID Mobile represents an exciting opportunity for Motorola to build on our track record of delivering innovative products to meet customer needs,” said Joe White, vice president of RFID business development for Motorola Enterprise Mobility. “Motorola is actively working with Microsoft so that our customers will be able to reliably and seamlessly run applications on BizTalk RFID Mobile.”

Microsoft BizTalk RFID Mobile when used with BizTalk Server 2006 R2 enables real-time decisions by extending business process to Windows CE and Windows Mobile 5.0 applications. BizTalk Server 2006 R2, Microsoft’s core SOA and BPM technology, which was generally available in September 2007, included advancements for fixed RFID readers including device management, data filtering and business rules, electronic data interchange (EDI), and interoperability with line-of-business adapters for manufacturing, finance and healthcare.

“It’s only natural that Microsoft extends BizTalk RFID out to mobile devices, and it complements its mobile hardware partners’ very well,” said John Fontanella, vice president of Research at AMR Research Inc. “The ability to operate at the edge in real time opens up opportunities that can only further enhance RFID’s value.”

Today, Microsoft also announced the BizTalk RFID Standards Pack, for customers to seamlessly integrate their RFID solutions with Electronic Product Code (EPC) global ratified standards, including Tag Data Translator (TDT) and Low Level Reader Protocol (LLRP) standards.
